About two weeks prior to SXSW our audio engineer, Ethan, sent me a text asking if we were recording The Black and the White in Austin. Apparently he had just seen them perform and he dug it. I replied that I did not know who that band was, but that I’d check them out and see what was up. Turns out that Dave Bell who does our scheduling had beaten me to the punch-line and was already hip to this groove. So two weeks passed and we were getting ready to have The Black and the White open up our SXSW festivities as the first band of 41 to perform, but then we got an email. Their lead singer was sick and stuck in a hospital back in LA, bummer city. Oddly enough, the dude who edited this video and shot some of it, Joel Moody, was also stuck in a hospital in LA that day. He too was supposed to be in Austin to film for us, but health comes first. Luckily, both guys recovered in a timely fashion. The Black and the White made it for their rescheduled Sunday session, and Joel was there to film it. It’s pretty cool that folks get out of the hospital and come to Jam in the Van. I’m glad people see this as an important stop on the journey for them. We’ll keep the stop available as long as we can, and we do accept rain checks…
