Blurring the lines between indie rock and alternative dance music, Sego emerges as a dynamic force in the realm of lyric-forward sounds, melding freewheeling melodies with an undercurrent of anxious energy. From the dance-pop pulsations of their debut EP, “Wicket Youth,” to the introspective indie rock explorations of their sophomore album, “Sego Sucks,” the band has continually pushed the boundaries of sonic experimentation.

Originating from the vibrant music scene of Provo, Utah, frontman Spencer Petersen, once a music major at BYU, and drummer Thomas Carroll made their way to the eclectic landscape of Los Angeles as part of the indie rock collective Eyes Lips Eyes. It was there that Petersen’s solo songwriting journey began, eventually joining forces with Carroll to birth the mesmerizing soundscape of Sego’s debut EP under Kitsuné Music in 2014.

Their musical evolution continued with the addition of Alyssa Davey on bass and Brandon McBride on guitar/keyboards, transforming their quartet into a powerhouse of sonic innovation. The result? A gritty, rock-infused masterpiece titled “Once Was Lost Now Just Hanging Around,” released on Dine Alone and Raygun Records (U.K.) in 2016. Their electrifying live performances alongside OK Go in 2017 solidified their status as ones to watch in the indie rock circuit.

As the world grappled with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sego adapted and evolved, welcoming multi-instrumentalist Kathleen Frewin into the fold. Their resilience shone through with the release of the epic 17-minute opus, “Life with Pam,” in October 2020, showcasing their unyielding commitment to pushing musical boundaries.

Now, with venues reopening and a renewed sense of creative vigor, Sego returns with a tantalizing glimpse into their latest sonic experimentations. Teaming up with producer Nate Pyfer, known for his work with Kaskade and The Moth & the Flame, they unveil “TANDANG” in March 2023—a seductive blend of alt-pop and rap that serves as a testament to their ever-evolving sound.

As Sego continues to carve their own path in the musical landscape, one thing remains certain: their journey is far from over. With each release, they invite listeners to join them on a sonic adventure where the only limit is the imagination.
