Some of the cats that played this session were hip before hip was cool, man. Dig it? These dudes, they’ve probably seen so much in their lifetimes. You wonder where Telluride Blues and Brews Festival pops up on their radar? Does it even register? Have they just seen so much shit at this point?
For us, Telluride was pretty awesome. They treated us excellently. The music was awesome. The weather left a bit to be desired, but that’s kind of part of the charm. I can’t think of many other festivals where you get the sensation of being warmed by music and dancing. So I wonder, is it just another blip for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band vets?
Probably not. You see, they probably wouldn’t still be doing, and passing it on down if it wasn’t something special every time. Check out their condensed line-up. Even this small sample size spans generations. We watched them the night before they played this session. They had a late night set that you had to take a gondola up thousands of feet into the sky to go see. They played deep into the night, with several special guests including Jim James hopping on the stage to join in on the fun. So I guess there shouldn’t actually be any doubt about it, these guys ain’t just going through some motions, their living it because that’s what they love. It comes out through their instruments, and it’s always, always, a good time.
